EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Thieves use high-tech trick to steal 5 cars in Elmont, Franklin Square

Nassau police say four people stole five cars in Franklin Square and Elmont using ‘antenna relay’ last Tuesday and Wednesday.

News 12 has obtained exclusive surveillance of the group stealing a car in Franklin Square that uses the technology. It works by using an antenna that connects to key fobs left inside of a home.

“Thieves, what they do is they have a device that can get close to your house, it can communicate with the fob,” says TechRadar’s U.S. editor-in-chief Lance Ulanoff.

The wireless signal then unlocks the car and starts it right up.

Ulanoff says that manufacturers are looking into putting in additional security, but the technology isn’t there yet.

Nassau police tells News 12 that no arrests have been made, and they are urging people to keep key fobs stored far from the car in a metal box, to never leave them in the car and to report any suspicious activity.
