Exclusive Android upgrade coming to Samsung Galaxy phones

Time is ticking down to the next big Samsung smartphone release, which is expected to be the Galaxy S24 series in January or February 2024. For the second year in a row it looks like Qualcomm is working closely with Samsung in a deal to give the top Galaxy S phone an exclusive, more powerful version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset that was unveiled recently.

The Galaxy S24 series is likely to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, a souped-up version of the chip with a higher processor clock speed, just like that 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy used in the S23 phones that was faster than the normal 8 Gen 2 used in competing phones from Android manufacturers such as OnePlus, Sony, and Xiaomi.

Sammobile has reported on the existence of the 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy after spotting a post on X, formerly Twitter, showing new benchmark results on the chipset testing app Geekbench. The Samsung chip appears to have different specs from the normal 8 Gen 3 Express.co.uk was shown by Qualcomm at the Snapdragon Summit event in October.

The extra boost in clock speed is designed to lend a tiny bit more power to the CPU and GPU of the Galaxy S24. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy helped Samsung differentiate the chip in the Galaxy S23 series, saying it had better gaming performance than phones such as the OnePlus 11 and Xiaomi 13.

The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus are expected to have 12GB RAM while the Galaxy S24 Ultra could have up to 16GB RAM, which would make them powerful Android options going into 2024. But depending on where you live, you might not be able to get your hands on the phones with an 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip.

Express.co.uk has reported previously that in the UK, only the S24 Ultra will get a Snapdragon chipset, with the S24 and S24 Plus lined up to use one of Samsung’s own chips, the Exynos 2400. In the past, reviewers and buyers have complained the Exynos versions of Samsung Galaxy phones don’t always perform as well or have as good battery life as their Snapdragon counterparts.

Samsung tends to release Snapdragon versions of its phones to markets like the US, but uses its own Exynos chips in other regions. So if you live in the UK and want the Android phone with one of the best possible chipsets in 2024, it looks like you’ll have to splash out on the high-end Galaxy S24 Ultra.
