UK households can slash 50% off their energy bills on certain days of the week with a new scheme launched by ScottishPower.
The energy supplier, which serves around five million UK homes and businesses, has launched half-price weekends as part of its new Power Saver service.
Customers who sign up will automatically be given 50% off their electricity unit rate every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm.
The scheme rewards those who shift their electricity usage to times of the day when there is less demand on the grid, or when there is more renewable energy available.
To sign up, you need to be a ScottishPower electricity customer with a communicating smart meter and agree to sharing half-hourly meter readings with the supplier.
ScottishPower will contact you by email within 14 days of signing up and will let you know when you can start taking part in half-price energy-saving events on a weekend.
Your smart meter will let the supplier know how much energy you have used during these events and this will be used to calculate your total usage per event. The results will then show as ‘Power Saver Credit’ on your bill.
Customers will be rewarded for every kWh of electricity that is used during off-peak times. You will be charged for your electricity as normal, but the supplier will credit your bill so that you only pay half-price on your unit rate.
Households should note that the scheme excludes the daily standing charge which will be paid at your normal rate.

“By shifting some of your electricity use to off-peak times, you’ll be helping to balance the demand on the grid and make the most of renewable energy. And of course, any electricity you use between these times will be half-price.”
