Eden Gardens tops in 5G download speeds this IPL: Open Signal


Kolkata’s Eden Gardens topped the list of Indian Premier League 2023 venues on 5G availability and download speed, while the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad gave the best video streaming experience over 5G network, a report by data and insights provider Opensignal said.

Of the 12 venues for this year’s IPL, 11 have 5G coverage, the outlier being the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. The Narendra Modi Stadium had the best 5G upload speed, while visitors at the Mumbai Indians’ home ground Wankhede had the best multiplayer gaming experience over 5G.

“India’s oldest and one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world — Eden Gardens (Kolkata) — is top for 5G Download Speeds, with a whopping 380.4Mbps, on average. Meanwhile, users in a further four stadiums clocked up 5G download speeds that average above 300Mbps,” Opensignal said in its report.

These include Narendra Modi Stadium (360.2Mbps), Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium (341.8Mbps), Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (336.5Mbps), and Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (322.9Mbps).

The overall download speeds across all 12 venues range from 17.2Mbps to 43.9Mbps with Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium topping the chart (43.9Mbps) followed by the Narendra Modi Stadium with an overall download speed of 40.9Mbps.

The analysis includes data collected within 1500 meters of the geographical co-ordinates of the stadiums between February 1 and May 1 this year.

When it comes to mobile upload speeds overall, and 5G, the Narendra Modi Stadium topped the list. The average 5G upload speeds across stadiums ranged from 16.8Mbps at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Chandigarh to 25.9Mbps at the Narendra Modi Stadium.Assam’s Barsapara Stadium gave match goers connectivity 99.1% of the time, the highest among all venues, though when it came to 5G availability, it was Eden Gardens at the top with 41.5% availability. All stadiums had overall connectivity more than 96% of the time.

“Overall, more than half of the stadiums score above 60% on Excellent Consistent Quality and above 80% for Core Consistent Quality,” the report added.

Excellent Consistent Quality represents the proportion of tests that met recommended thresholds for more demanding applications, while Core Consistent Quality considers thresholds for less demanding applications.
