Dozens of schools getting millions of dollars for tech – Spectrum News

Dozens of schools in New York are set to receive a combined $13.2 million to make technology upgrades in the classroom and security, Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced.

The money is coming from a $2 billion bond act approved by voters in 2014 that is meant to boost technology for schools around New York.

“Investing in our children’s education is critical to not only building foundations for individual success, but ensuring our future leaders are prepared to guide New York forward,” Governor Hochul said. “The Smart Schools Bond Act supports schools across New York State in that effort by providing students with a safe, secure and enlightening environment.”

All told, 48 proposals were approved a state review board that is determining how to spend the money from proposals made by school districts and special education schools.

The latest round of funding includes $7.9 million for security, $4.7 million for classroom technology and $356,000 for connectivity programs. There was an additional $275,000 approved for non-public schools’ classroom technology.

“The Smart Schools Bond Act investments are crucial in providing the technology to engage students in learning regardless of modality, and enhancing security systems to keep them safe within their school communities,” State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa said. “This funding is vital in our commitment to ensuring that every student in our state has equitable access to a high-quality education.”
