High blood sugars are the hallmark of type 2 diabetes, which can lead to subtle symptoms such as increased thirst and hunger.
Certain beverages, which you might not of when considering sugary drinks, could be hindering your management of diabetes.
“It goes without saying that sugary drinks cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels,” cautioned Dr Fernando.
Take fruit juice, for example, which some people might consider as healthy, in fact, promotes high blood sugars.
Dr Fernado said: “While they’re often promoted as healthy, it’s important to be mindful of the impact that fruit juices can have on blood sugar levels.

“Those with added sugar obviously have more, but even those without have a moderate impact on blood sugar levels as they contain fructose – a natural sugar found in fruits.
“When fruits are juiced or processed, the fibre content is reduced and sugars become more concentrated, which means they can cause a rapid increase in sugar levels.”
Also be aware of sweetened tea and coffees, and sports drinks as they “all enable quick absorption of sugars into the bloodstream via the digestive system”.
Dr Fernando advised: “If you’re looking to avoid blood sugar spikes but do enjoy flavoured drinks, try flavouring your water with a few drops of fruit juice, or diluting a small amount of your fruit juice with a large amount of water.”
Dr Fernando added: “If this is too difficult to do you can wean yourself off by gradually diluting more and more.
“Start with 50 percent juice and 50 percent water, and work your way down to just a few drops over time.”
As for its impact on blood sugar levels, Dr Fernando said: “Individual responses vary depending on your metabolism, diet, exercise and medication.”
Dr Fernando stated: “If you’re concerned about your reaction to sugary drinks, always speak to a healthcare professional.”
