PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation will start a series of lane closures on Interstate 95 on Friday night.
The closures will be at the Cranston and Providence border.
The closures will take place over the next four weeks as crews replace the Wellington Avenue bridge.
The department said at least two lanes will remain open in both directions, but traffic is expected to be very backed up in the area during construction.
Drivers are advised to use alternative routes like Interstate 295 or Route 10.
The department warned that there may be lane splits on either side of the work zone at times. Officials said drivers should not stop or suddenly change lanes as all lanes go through and will merge back together.
The closures will last from 8 p.m. on Fridays to 5 a.m. on Mondays.
A signed detour will be posted for Wellington Avenue until mid-September.
