Dave the Diver dev Mintrocket reveals sci-fi battler, Wakerunners

Mintrocket, the studio behind Dave the Diver, today revealed its new game, Wakerunners, a top-down team battler game in a sci-fi world. It revealed several of the playable characters in the game’s trailer, as well as its unique movement mechanics. The game currently has no release date, but it will have a playable demo available during Steam Next Fest.

Originally revealed as “Project TB,” Wakerunners is a 4v4 and 5v5 title set in a sci-fi dystopia, in which factions of humanity battle it out in a ruined world. The player characters traverse the battlefield with an acceleration mechanic common to all of them, but each one will have their own abilities and advantages on the battlefield. The demo features seven characters and five modes: Team Deathmatch Mode, Raider Mode, Control Conquest Mode, Command Siege Mode and Escort Mode.

ChaeHyun Lim, the game’s director, told GamesBeat in an interview, “I love fast-paced action games like Tekken, Call of Duty and Overwatch. I wanted to create an action game that requires quick thinking, judgment, and wits, which Wakerunners incorporates these points … . Players will have a unique experience as they learn to master the various active controls and speedy movement.”

Lim added that the team looks forward to incorporating feedback from players who play the Steam Next Fest demo. “Naturally, our main goal in developing the game is to cater to as wide a range of players as possible. While we’re designing the game with many types of players in mind, we think it will particularly appeal to those who enjoy fast-paced action and those who like team-based games.” Steam Next Fest itself runs from February 5 to February 12.
