CNN unveils 'Columbia,’ ‘TinderBox’, ‘Spy Wars’ at Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. All details

At the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront event held at The Theater, Madison Square Garden on May 17, CNN revealed three fresh non-fiction series, offering a sneak peek into its future endeavors following significant downsizing last year – “Columbia: The Final Flight”, “TinderBox: Great Moments in Pop Culture” and “Spy Wars.”

‘Columbia: The Final Flight’

The first one, “Columbia: The Final Flight” delves into the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. This series is a collaborative effort between CNN Original Series, BBC, and Mindhouse Productions, with global distribution handled by BBC Studios.

‘TinderBox: Great Moments in Pop Culture’

Another series in the works is “TinderBox: Great Moments in Pop Culture,” which explores influential TV moments that achieved widespread cultural significance. Examples include Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out on her sitcom and the groundbreaking interracial kiss on Star Trek.

‘Spy Wars’

Furthermore, CNN is partnering with the BBC once again for “Spy Wars”, a series that unravels the captivating narratives of real-life spies during the heightened tensions of the Cold War in the early 1980s between the Western and Eastern blocs.

In light of Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive cost-cutting measures, CNN made an announcement last year regarding the discontinuation of commissioned projects with external partners in its Original Series and Original Films divisions.

As a result, the network shifted its focus towards in-house production of projects. These units were previously responsible for notable works like “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and “Navalny,” the latter of which earned the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this year. Unfortunately, the Tucci series was canceled by the network in December.
