A Swedish woman travelled to India to marry a man from Uttar Pradesh she met on Facebook, news agency ANI reported. According to Hindu customs, Christen Liebert married Pawan Kumar at Prema Devi School in Awagarh, Etah.

Christen was dressed in traditional Indian attire and jewellery in photos and videos provided by ANI. The woman allegedly met Pawan on Facebook 10 years ago. She also participated in the varmala ritual, placing the garland around her husband’s neck.

In 2012, the pair became Facebook friends and spoke via phone and video conversations. Their friendship grew into love over time. Pawan allegedly met Christen in Agra a year ago. They chose to marry after viewing the Taj Mahal together.

According to ANI, Christen stated that she loves India and is extremely pleased with her marriage.

Pawan is an engineer who graduated from Dehradun with a B. Tech. His family had no objections to his marriage to a foreigner. Geetam Singh, Pawan’s father, stated that they would be pleased if the children were happy. “We completely support this marriage,” Geetam told ANI.
