Shenzhen Blood Center and China Telecom Shenzhen Branch have launched China’s first blood transportation drone platform to help ensure safety and improve efficiency in blood transportation.
The platform uses the advantages of 5G’s large bandwidth, combined with artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies, to render high-definition images and real-time feedback of cold-chain temperature throughout the entire process.
Center director Ning Li said that saving lives is a race against time: “Developing such a platform can greatly enhance the emergency blood support capacity in a megacity like Shenzhen and provide the fastest blood support for patients in urgent need of blood transfusions.”
The platform currently covers routes to facilities such as the Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Luohu People’s Hospital and the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Four new routes are to be introduced soon.
Trial operations of the platform began in August 2023 and so far 203 flights have delivered 434kg of blood around Shenzhen.
