Changing lives with Think Exam: Using technology to make your hiring bias-free

“Recruitment is hands down the toughest part of an HR professional’s work life. Whether I am scouting for experienced candidates or freshers, it is a constant grind to find suitable people to fill job profiles. In many cases, the effort is wasted when a bad hire pulls down the department, his/her peers, and ends up costing more in indirect terms such as low productivity, quite quitting, etc. Of course, we are trained to avoid that, but the current 10:1 candidate vs. hiring ratio is very demoralising, and I sincerely wish we could improve it.”

As an experienced HR professional, Radha is no stranger to balancing recruitment, retention, and attrition. In fact, it is the only constant in her job. However, she often feels that the pool of candidates never gets better; filtering good prospects is complex and seems to be getting more complicated. For every 15 CVs she receives, only 1 promising candidate gets an offer letter. With nothing else to change and faced with hiring for a new client project, she considers integrating a tech tool to filter her candidates. “I was quite surprised to see that the number of shortlisted CVs had increased by almost 30 percent! When I manually went through some of these they were completely up to the standards we had set. As we proceeded with the coding assessments, we saw a significant uptick in the number of candidates making it to the next stage. Finally, the hiring ratio has plummeted!” Says Radha about the experience.

So, what happened?
Technology is not magic; but it is a great equaliser!

Adding a layer of unbiased technology, Radha was able to identify candidates based only on skills and their personality. HR professionals bring an empathetic outlook to candidate selection but unconscious bias, rigid selection criteria or sometimes even personal habits tend to mould early stage recruitment. Adding a layer of technology, ensures that no promising candidate is overlooked – ever.Radha’s organisation used Think Exam’s AI-based recruitment solutions to assess candidates for a range of skills and accomplishments. Hiring programmers for a certain client, the assessments were focused on finding the right skill from the right person, hence the tests covered domain expertise, a hackathon and personality and behavioural testing.

These assessments were auto-generated via an external software, Think Exam’s test library, to match the skills and mindset needed for the job profile. The results and reports generated at the end were also automated. Minimising human contact in the first few rounds ensured that only the most suitable candidates came to the fore.

The technology was led throughout by Radha’s team who used their professional experience to make sure that the software was constantly monitored and tweaked to get the best outcomes. Ultimately, the team hired better, faster and cheaper!
