LAS VEGAS – Competing in one of the most competitive in-season tournaments in the country, both Brevin Cassella and Cory Day have reached the podium in their respective weight classes after each wrestler won at least three matches throughout the day.
“Cory and Brevin put in a great day today,” said Binghamton Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. “They both got some great wins. Putting yourself on the podium out here proves that you can be a threat at the NCAA championships.”
Cassella began his day by defeating Sacred Heart’s Scott Jarosz in an 8-1 decision. In the Round of 16, Cassella found himself in a difficult battle against Northwestern’s Maxx Mayfield, who is ranked 16th in the country by FloWrestling. The two fought to a 1-1 tie heading into overtime. The match eventually made its way into the second tiebreaker, where Cassella defeated Mayfield by registering 30 more seconds of riding time. The junior’s victory was the first time a Binghamton wrestler defeated an opponent ranked in either the FloWrestling or InterMat polls this season.
In the Quarterfinals against third-ranked Cameron Armine of Michigan, Cassella nearly came back from a 3-0 deficit, but was ultimately defeated in a 4-2 decision. He then finished his day strong with a 2-1 decision over No. 31 Will Miller of Appalachian State.
Day, who entered the tournament with four pins, picked up his fifth in his first match against Morgan State’s Sam Alsheimer. In the Round of 16, Day fell to 15th ranked Taye Ghadiali of Campbell in a 17-6 major decision. The redshirt senior would bounce back in the second match of the Consolation Round of 16 against North Carolina’s Cade Lautt. Down 3-0 in the first period, Day completed a reversal on Lautt before getting his sixth pin of the season to win the match.
For his first match in the Consolation Round of 8, Day held off 30th-ranked Daniel Szuba of Rider in an 11-10 decision, giving the Bearcats their second win of the season against a ranked opponent. He then advanced via a medical forfeit over No. 16 Konner Doucet of Oklahoma State.
Other Highlights
- Will Ebert won his first match of the day in a 19-4 technical fall over Sacred Heart’s Owen Ayotte to reach the Round of 16 at 174 lbs. It marks the first technical fall of the season for Ebert and second of his career.
- Michael Zarif recorded his first pin of the season against Sacred Heart’s Vincent Milazzo in the first match of the Consolation Round of 16. It is the third pin of Zarif’s career, and first since Nov. 7, 2021, when he pinned Dom Merola of New Jersey City University.
- Less than a week after taking first place at Lock Haven’s Mat-Town Open I, Carter Baer picked up another victory with a 10-1 major decision over Sacred Heart’s Brandon Teresa in the first match of the Consolation Round of 16.
- Carson Wagner and Ivan Garcia both won one match in the first half of the Consolation Round of 16 in a 2-1 decision. Wagner defeated LIU’s Robbie Sagaris, while Garcia took down Arizona State’s Carter Dibert. Wagner also defeated Sagaris via a technical fall in a dual during the Bearcats’ season-opening victory over the Sharks back on Nov. 17.
