Can I continue with this mutual fund portfolio?

I am 32 years old. I have been investing in eight mutual fund schemes for three years.

PGIM India Midcap Opportunities Fund: Rs 1,500
Canara Robeco Bluechip Equity Fund: Rs 2,000
Quant Tax Plan Growth : Rs 1,000
Quant Small Cap Fund: Rs 2,000
Canara Robeco Conservative Hybrid Fund: Rs 1,500
Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund: Rs 2,000
Tata Balanced Advantage Fund: Rs 1,500
UTI Nifty 50 Index Fund: Rs 1,000

I have a gold loan of Rs 3.7 lakh with 9.5% interest per annum. I also have a personal loan of Rs 2.50 lakh. I want a debt-free life and an early retirement at 50 years. I want to build a house with a small loan and low liability, I want to give my child a better education also.

Kindly advise me whether I should stick to this MF portfolio or whether I need to change it.

First, if you want to prioritise paying off your loans, you should do some homework and put together a plan to repay the loan as possible. You should pay off the loan with high interest first. It really doesn’t make sense to set aside money to invest when you are paying very high interest rates on loans.

Two, equity mutual funds are ideal to create a corpus to take care of various long term financial needs. However, you don’t need to invest in eight schemes, especially when you are investing a modest amount of money. Investing a small amount in too many schemes often leads to over diversification and duplication of portfolios. It also drags down the overall returns. You don’t need more than four schemes to diversify and maximise returns. You should always choose mutual funds based on your risk profile. Since you have not shared your risk profile, we can’t recommend any schemes for you. If you have a conservative risk profile, you should invest mostly in large cap funds. If you have a moderate risk profile, you may invest in flexi cap schemes. We do not recommend risky schemes to new and inexperienced investors who are investing a small sum.
