Cabinet likely to meet today in unusual move, a day after election announcement

In a rare move, the Union Cabinet is expected to meet on Sunday morning, following the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates, reported The Times of India.

Although the specific agenda for the meeting remained undisclosed, ToI sources indicated that several significant matters might be discussed like negotiations on a trade deal with Oman and the potential elevation of the Line of Credit to $250 million for Iran’s Chabahar port.

Last week, a high-level inter-ministerial committee convened a meeting to discuss strategies for improving the Line of Credit (LoC).

Discussions on the FTA with Oman where intense negotiations have taken place over the past few months were slated for the last meeting itself, but no decision was announced.

With the ‘model code of conduct’ enforced, the government faces limitations in making policy decisions. However, matters concerning international relations have been under discussion. Any declaration must receive approval from the Election Commission (EC).

During a recent council of ministers meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that governance should not be neglected amidst the election proceedings.
