What’s new?

The Galaxy S23 Ultra was revealed alongside the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus. Combined, these three handsets form the latest Galaxy S range for 2023. We’ve also rounded up the  separately, if you want something a little more affordable (with fewer features) than the all-singing, all-dancing Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra packs a mammoth 6.8-inch OLED touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh-rate and 1440p resolution. That’s bigger than the Galaxy S23 (6.1-in) and Galaxy S23 Plus (6.6-in) which both top out at 1080p maximum resolution.

You’ll be able to draw, annotate, and make handwritten notes on that expansive screen using the latest generation of S Pen stylus. Hovering the S Pen over the screen unlocks new extra functionality, like the right-click on a mouse. The S Pen charges wirelessly whenever it’s popped back inside its dedicated holder on the phone.

S23 Ultra features

  • 200MP main camera
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy
  • Huge 5,000mAh battery
  • Redesigned S Pen stylus
  • 120Hz AMOLED display
  • Fast wired and wireless charging

Inside the Galaxy S23 Ultra, you’ll find the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, a tweaked version of the latest system-on-a-chip from Qualcomm specifically for the new Galaxy S range. The US chip manufacturer says this is “the fastest Snapdragon ever,” so expect lightning-fast loading times and game performance.

However, given that Qualcomm is supplying its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to dozens of other flagship phones throughout 2023, don’t expect that much extra oomph from this Galaxy-specific version as the US firm is presumably saving the biggest gains for the inevitable Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

What makes the decision to plump for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy so extraordinary is that it ends a decade-long debate amongst Samsung fans. In previous years, Samsung relied on its own in-house processors, dubbed Exynos, to power Galaxy S devices in more than 100 countries, including the UK, mainland Europe, India, and North American, Australian and South Korean customers enjoyed Qualcomm chipsets.

This wouldn’t have been an issue, except tests regularly showed that Exynos silicon was significantly slower than its Qualcomm-designed counterpart. This triggered debates around performance, battery life, and other crucial stats around each new Galaxy S generation. Thankfully, that argument is a thing of the past now, with every new Galaxy S23 model arriving with the shiny new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy under the bonnet.

You’ll be able to draw, annotate, and make notes on the expansive 6.8-inch screen with the latest generation of S Pen stylus

As well as a dramatic increase in gaming performance, Samsung says the new chipset unlocks faster 5G data transfer speeds, smarter AI, improved Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The new silicon is more efficient which, coupled with the beefy 5,000mAh cell, results in some solid battery life. Samsung says you can enjoy 26 hours of video playback before you’ll need to worry about finding a charger, but you can read our in-depth  to find out whether it lived up to that claim during our tests.

Galaxy S23 Ultra enjoys an impressive camera upgrade over the standard Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus, thanks to the new 200-megapixel camera. This features a new Astro Hyerlapse mode, which Samsung has designed to take stunning shots of the stars. Night Mode also enjoys a quality bump thanks to the new 200-megapixel sensor, Samsung says.

By default, the camera will produce 12MP shots – with Samsung’s software combining information from multiple pixels to compensate for poor conditions. The result should be detailed, colourful, and well-lit photographs that remain small enough to send over email or WhatsApp without using all of your monthly 5G data allowance in one fell swoop.

It is possible to shoot images at full resolution using the main camera. With the dizzying number of pixels available in this mode, Galaxy S23 Ultra owners will be able to crop into photos without losing any image quality – perfect for prolific editors. Of course, like the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, a telephoto camera with 3x lossless optical zoom is also included in the tripel-camera array.

Budding Hollywood filmmakers can also shoot impressive videos in stunning 8K at 30 frames-per-second, with Super Quad Pixel technology that offers much better image stabilisation making home movies appear silky smooth.

Latest pay monthly deals

Galaxy S23 Ultra is available from all major UK mobile networks.

If you’re looking to sign-up for a pay monthly contract for the all-new Galaxy S23 Ultra, there are some brilliant deals around. For example, EE will include a Netflix subscription for the duration of the contract, while Sky Mobile customers can stream endless hours of boxsets, sports, and movies via Sky Go without using a single megabyte of their monthly 5G allowance.

And don’t forget, regardless of which network you decide upon, you’ll still be eligible to claim all of the deals offered direct from Samsung, including the six-month subscription to Disney Plus.

To make it easier to compare the latest pay monthly Galaxy S23 Ultra deals, we’ve only selected pay monthly plans with between 20-30GB of 5G data each month.

For more people, that will be more than enough to stream Spotify playlists, watch a handful of videos on YouTube, scroll through Instagram and Facebook, make an occasional video call on WhatsApp, and back-up your latest photos to the cloud while away from Wi-Fi. Of course, some will need more (or less) monthly data, but we felt this was a good middle-ground that should make comparisons between mobile networks easier.

Galaxy S23 Ultra review

We took delivery of a Galaxy S23 Ultra to put the latest hardware and software features through their paces.

Read our in-depth for answers to all of your questions, but with a coveted five-star rating, it’s fair to say that this handset really impressed us.

In our verdict, we wrote…

“Samsung could definitely be in with a shot of picking up the best smartphone of 2023. Its new Galaxy S23 Ultra hits all the right notes and those wanting the ultimate big-screen Android phone should probably end their search right now and simply hit the buy button.

“Yes, with a starting price of over £1,200 it’s ludicrously expensive and its gargantuan size isn’t going to suit all pockets but those niggles seem minor when you discover all the good bits about this phone.

“Its new screen – which is less curvaceous than before – is simply sublime, the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is truly mighty and the updated rear camera snaps stunning snaps no matter how bad your photography skills are or what lighting conditions you find yourself in.

“That’s all thanks to a new 200-megapixel sensor which not only offers some impressive features such as 100X zoom but also the ability to take crystal clear images at night.”
