BER Airport company enhances security with new screening tech – Travel And Tour World

The Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) took on the responsibility for overseeing passenger and baggage checks at BER Airport from January 1, 2024. This transition involved assuming the management, organization, execution, and financing of aviation security controls as per Section 5 of the German Aviation Security Act (LuftSiG) from the Federal Police, as planned earlier.

Following Frankfurt am Main, BER became the second German airport to manage aviation security controls on passengers and their luggage. The primary objective is to optimize processes and further decrease wait times for passengers, all while upholding the safety of passengers and staff as the utmost priority.

Collaborating closely with the Federal Police, FBB has diligently prepared for the assumption of these essential tasks over recent months. Initially, Securitas Aviation Service GmbH & Co. KG (Securitas) will continue conducting passenger and baggage checks.

Plans are underway to progressively equip the security controls at BER with advanced CT scanners. Terminal 2 already operates five out of eight CT scanners. The CT technology in these scanners ensures swift and reliable identification of various materials, allowing passengers using these lanes to keep liquids, smartphones, and other electronics in their carry-on bags. Similar installations are also planned for Terminal 1, with preparations already in progress.

Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, expressed gratitude to all involved in the project for their dedication in preparing for these security control responsibilities. She emphasized the opportunity this presents to streamline airport processes efficiently while maintaining robust aviation security standards. She also highlighted the partnership with Securitas and the ongoing reliability of the Federal Police as key elements.

Carsten Glade, President of the Federal Police Department Berlin, conveyed confidence in the collaborative efforts between the Federal Police and FBB, assuring that safety standards will be upheld without compromise on quality. He affirmed the commitment to advancing together and reiterated the Federal Police’s willingness to offer support and guidance when needed.

Tobias Soppart, Managing Director/Segment Manager at Securitas Aviation, underscored Securitas’s pride in contributing to airport security at BER with around 1,800 employees deployed since the airport’s inception. He emphasized how the new organizational model fosters stronger cooperation among the airport operator, Federal Police, and Securitas, benefiting passengers through better coordination in staff planning, technology usage, and services, all without compromising on security.
