Bengaluru fresher hiring sentiment down by 10%, hit by slump in IT sector

Around 65% of Bengaluru‘s companies said they were willing to hire freshers in the second half of this year – a fall from 75% in the first half – according to a survey by TeamLease Edtech, a division of Bengaluru-based TeamLease Group. The survey attributes this to the decline in hiring in the IT sector.

According to data from staffing firm Xpheno, IT services giants are expected to reduce their overall hiring by 40% in fiscal 2024.

The city is suffering a decline in terms of year-on-year comparison as well, with hiring intent up to 68% last year. However, Bengaluru companies still have the highest hiring intent for freshers in the country, followed by Mumbai at 61% and Chennai at 47%.

The report says that the top roles that will be hiring in the city in the second half of 2023 are Embedded Engineer (65%), Machine Learning Engineer (56%), Jr. SCM Analyst (43%), and Application Engineer (55%).

According to the report, 9% of employers in Bengaluru are willing to hire degree apprentices as well, second to Chennai and Pune at 10% each. Obtaining Certifications in Digital Marketing, Business Communication, Data Science, or Blockchain are likely to increase freshers’ chances of being hired.

The report presents an opportunity for Higher Education Institutes to refine their curricula, introduce new courses, and foster skill-building opportunities, TeamLease Edtech Co-founder Neeti Sharma told ET. “Aligning their teaching strategies with these market demands can significantly enhance student outcomes and employability in India. For the student community, this report will serve as a guideline for their career roadmap,” she said.

The report presents a positive picture for the country, with fresher hiring sentiment up 3% at 65%, compared to the first half of the year.
