Bored travellers are set to be entertained with the new security features on the latest Australian passport that contains secret hidden animals.

Other hidden features include a piece of Indigenous artwork and each document contains a unique nightscape that is only revealed under ultraviolet light.

But these hidden elements aren’t just cute, they are also advanced high-tech security.

The photo page is made of tough, high-security, layered plastic, known as polycarbonate, which is more durable than laminated paper and less likely to tear.

This page is laser-engraved, and not printed with ink.

On the lower left of the holder’s main photo is a raised map of Australia and a second photo appears in a transparent window.

Images of the Australian coast are printed on the inside front and back cover pages, and the visa pages showcase 17 iconic landscapes from around the country.

Under ultraviolet light, the sky in each image becomes a unique nightscape, and a local species of native fauna appears.

The passport has many other security features: The wattle on the security features page changes colour when held at different angles.

In ultraviolet light, the blue elements on the photo page turn bright red, and a red and white wattle appears on the inside front cover, under the Governor-General’s message.

The passports began rolling out in Australia in 2022.
