Amazon said the move was meant to help people who had been struggling to exchange the notes for smaller denominations.
As per the notification issued by the RBI, the Rs 2,000 note is being taken out of circulation in pursuance of the clean note policy. The central bank has asked people to exchange or deposit the Rs 2,000 note in banks by September 30, 2023.
The RBI has stressed the fact that Rs 2000 note continues to be a legal tender. This means that one can use the Rs 2000 note for buying goods and services, in everyday life transactions etc.
In a statement, Amazon Inc said that with its ‘cash load at doorstep’ service, KYCed customers can hand over additional cash or leftover change to the delivery agent to load the same to their Amazon Pay balance during a cash-on-delivery order. Up to Rs 50,000 per month, including Rs 2,000 denomination can be deposited in the Amazon Pay accounts.
Once the process of KYC is completed, customers can hand over the currency notes to their delivery agents after they place a cash-on-delivery order. The updated balance will start reflecting in the customer’s Amazon Pay balance shortly after, the company said.In a media interaction on May 22, 2023, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that procedural elements post-September 30, 2023 deadline or possible deadline extension will be taken based on the number of Rs 2000 notes that come back from circulation.
