All-electric DeLorean car spotted at massive Las Vegas tech show

When it comes to iconic movie cars, there’s the Batmobile, James Bond’s Aston Martin and…the DeLorean from Back to The Future.

And while you can’t own the first two because one’s fictional and the other’s expensive – you may have a shot at the third.

That’s because the DeLorean Motor Company of Texas, which owns the rights to the name and design of the original DMC-12 sports car, is bringing it back (…from the future?).

The new version of the car will be an all-electric reimagining of the classic coupe.

And we may have just caught our first glimpse of the prototype in the flesh.

Las Vegas is currently playing host to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the largest tech show in the world. Plenty of car brands are in attendance and that includes DeLorean.

Metro.co.uk spied what looks like a finished prototype of the new car on the show floor. Sadly, we weren’t able to open up the gull-wing doors and fire up the flux capacitor for ourselves.

From what we know, this DeLorean ‘Alpha5’ will manage a 300 mile range on a single charge and achieve 0-60mph in under 3 seconds.

If you’re curious, the 0-88mph time stands at 4.35 seconds. The estimated top speed is 155mph.

The only fly in the ointment is the fact DeLorean is producing a mere 9,351 models of the Alpha5. And getting hold of one doesn’t seem to be as clear as walking down to your local dealership and handing over a wad of cash.

To reserve a production slot, one must first join DeLorean’s Alphas Club by purchasing a lifetime membership for $88. An Alphas Club membership offers exclusive access to the DeLorean Exchange platform, where members may secure their production slot and receive early access to future products, collectibles, exclusive content and DeLorean experiential and partner events.

After joining the Alphas Club, members may then purchase their production slot for $2,500 (£2,110). Once a production slot is purchased, an owner may transfer, trade or sell their slot to other Alphas Club members through DeLorean Flex.

The DeLorean Flex program allows customers ‘complete control and customisation of their ownership journey’.

‘We are excited to help our Alphas Club members officially begin their journey to ownership,’ said Troy Beetz, chief marketing officer of DeLorean.

‘We will guide customers throughout the entire process to ownership, offering flexibility and support as they secure their ideal reservation and design their Alpha5.’

DeLorean says the coupe is expected to hit the road at some point in 2024.
