Renewable sources still account for less than 14% of India’s power generation, while their share in installed capacity has increased to 31 per cent. With the power minister announcing the addition of another 30GW coal capacity, India’s power mix is unlikely to change significantly in the near term.
Post-pandemic
While capacity addition growth has slowed, the generation pace of energy has quickened in the post-pandemic period.
Share in overall power generation While there is a push for an increasing share of renewable energy in the overall power generation, coal still dominates.
Coal accounted for 73 per cent of total power generation in 2023- 24 (till September). Some of gains for renewable have come on account of other non-fossil sources.
Is 2030 targets still achievable? The government of India has set a target of having 431 GW of renewable sources (excluding large hydro) by 2030. Nearly 31 per cent of generation will come from renewable sources.
