FRIDAY the 13th may be unlucky for some, but don’t leave your finances to fortune.
Here are 13 ways to help you save thousands of pounds in a year.
1) Shop through a cashback site to earn money from purchases. Quidco says its members earn an average £300 a year.
2) Swap your current account to bag free cash. First direct is currently offering new customers a £175 welcome (terms and conditions apply).
3) Shift your credit card debt to a zero per cent balance transfer card. Moneysupermarket found customers saved an average of £327 after making the switch.
4) Shop around for insurance. Households could save up to £492 by using a comparison site to find the best car and home cover, according to Comparethemarket.com.
5) Find the cheapest station for fuel. Petrolprices.com says its users can save £220 a year.
6) Sell your old phones. Households are sitting on an average of £842 in unused tech, says MusicMagpie. Have a clear out and trade it in for cash
7) Move savings to reap higher returns. Shifting £30,000 of cash to the best easy access savings account would leave you £628 a year better off than in the top branch account, according to Hargreaves Lansdown.
8) Hunt out the best mortgage rate. Switching from your lender’s standard variable rate to the average five-year fixed rate would save £1,330 on mortgage bills, according to broker L&C.
9) Use a shopping comparison site. Trolley.co.uk estimates users make savings of up to 30 per cent a year on groceries, working out at £1,100 for a family of four.
10) Cancel unused subscriptions fast. It takes a typical six months for us to end unneeded services, costing an average of £105, found TopCashback.
11) Look for the best broadband. CompareTheMarket found one in three of its customers could save up to £188 by switching provider.
12) Haggle to save cash. Broadband, phone contracts and insurance are among the most popular services to negotiate, saving an average of £155, according to TopCashback.
